"Well, one thing that we know we aren't going to grow is daylilies. The bloom only lasts for one day so we couldn't use them in flower arrangements."
My mother and I used to sit and look through all the flower brochures and plan which perennials we would grow. After living in Miami, Florida for almost 40 years, we escaped all the crime in the city to a beautiful mountain top in southern Upshur county. My mom, brother and I decided it was time to "Jump Ship" and head for the hills. We sold our homes, businesses and everything that wasn't nailed down and headed north.
My mother was a retired teacher and had part ownership in a florist shop in Miami. We brought all the ribbon, wire, and other floral goodies with us in the big move. As we planned our new life in the hills, we would enjoy the winter nights, discussing which plants to grow.
Hemerocallis is a Greek word, meaning "Beauty for a Day". The daylily blossom only last one day and that’s where it got its name. As I mentioned earlier, we decided that we were not even going to fool around and waste our time growing daylilies for obvious reasons.
THEN…it happened…a friendly soul from The Fred Brooks Garden Club in Buckhannon, WV., gave my mother some daylilies…and as the saying goes…..the rest is history. We were hooked.
It's no wonder that the daylily has become America's favorite perennial. DAYLILIES ARE VERY ADDICTIVE. Once you get your first one and you see how easy they are to care for…(almost no care at all…a little water…etc) you are addicted and Ohhhh the beauty they reward you with…year after year. There are over 35,000 registered daylilies with The American Hemerocallis Society.
July is peak bloom time at our display gardens located in French Creek, WV.
